Mrs. Kristen Cox, Secretary of the Department of Disabilities in the administration of Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich and candidate for Lieutenant Governor, visited Marlin Steel Wire Products on October 26, 2006. She met all the employees and learned first-hand of the wire basket and wire hook fabricator's success in meeting tough competition from low-cost Chinese suppliers.
Drew Greenblatt, president of Marlin Wire, conducted a tour for the Secretary. She was most impressed with the use of robots and other high-technology equipment to assure high quality and quick delivery of the company's trademark products - custom and stock wire baskets and s hooks for industrial, medical, automotive, aerospace, and food companies. In remarks to the employees after the tour, she praised them for keeping manufacturing in Maryland. We need more companies like Marlin.

Mrs. Cox, legally blind since childhood, spent eighteen months as a missionary serving the people of Brazil before earning a degree in educational psychology and a certificate in special education. She has been a tireless advocate for education and empowerment for those with disabilities. Before becoming a policy maker, Kris coordinated the National Federation for the Blind's legislative agenda at their national headquarters. Then she became a Presidential appointee to the United States Department of Education, where she helped develop national initiatives to promote the employment and independence of individuals with disabilities.
Governor Robert Ehrlich named Kris the Secretary of the nation's first cabinet-level Department of Disabilities. In that position Kris top priorities have been empowering all Marylanders through education, healthcare and opportunity.
