Marlin Steel specializes in producing stainless steel mesh baskets to meet the unique requirements and tolerances of your application. If you need a basket for parts washing or handling small items, a mesh basket may be your ideal choice. We make thousands of custom steel baskets and racks each week for customers with exacting needs in the pharmaceutical, defense, automotive, aerospace and food processing industries.

Unlike solid-wall containers, wire mesh baskets allow free flow of air and liquids through the open space so parts dry thoroughly after every wash cycle. Not sure which style fits? Start with our basket selection guide, then request a quote.

Welded vs. Woven Wire Mesh Baskets

Welded wire mesh baskets use wire that is crossed and welded at each intersection, giving a rigid structure that holds its shape under repeated handling and washing. Woven wire mesh baskets interlace the strands in an over-and-under pattern and are welded only at the ends, which offers more flexibility and durability for thermal cycling. Most of our industrial mesh baskets use welded construction, though we can build either way depending on part size and process. Read woven mesh vs. welded wire mesh for more.

Welded wire mesh Woven wire mesh Expanded metal
Construction Wires crossed and welded at each intersection Over-and-under strands, welded at the ends Single sheet slit and stretched
Rigidity High More flexible High, for heavy parts
Best for Repeated handling and washing Thermal cycling, finer parts Heavy-duty washing and handling

For heavier loads, see our expanded metal baskets and how expanded metal mesh is measured.

Choosing Between 304 and 316 Stainless Steel Mesh Baskets

Material selection matters as much as construction. A 304 stainless steel mesh basket is our standard, most cost-effective material for general washing, sterilization and handling, with strong corrosion resistance against common cleaning chemicals. For harsher environments, such as saltwater exposure or high-chloride processes, 316 stainless steel mesh baskets add resistance to pitting and chemical attack. Our engineers help you decide which grade fits your process and budget before we finalize a design. See 316 vs. 304 stainless steel.

Industrial Mesh Baskets for Parts Washing and Material Handling

Parts washing is one of the most common applications we build for, since the open mesh supports full drainage and airflow during wash and rinse cycles. We also produce mesh baskets for ultrasonic cleaning, where consistent wire spacing and welds hold up to repeated vibration.

Beyond washing, our mesh basket material handling designs move parts between work cells, support visible inventory in lean environments, and nest together to save storage space. Need dividers or a lid to keep parts organized? We can build those features into any parts washing basket design. See also baskets with dividers and baskets with lids, and read when wire mesh baskets are best.

Industries We Serve

  • Food processing. Our stainless steel mesh baskets for food processing hold up in washdown environments and frequent sanitation cycles. We offer antimicrobial coating options to support food safety and compliance.
  • Medical. Our baskets support autoclave sterilization and cleanroom handling with smooth, burr-free welds. Our ISO 13485:2016 certification supports hygienic handling in medical and pharmaceutical applications.
  • Aerospace. Our baskets carry precision parts through cleaning, testing and staging. We are registered with CAGE code 30UU3.

Building Better Wire Mesh Baskets

Whether you want one of our existing designs or a custom-engineered basket, every mesh basket project starts with a questionnaire so our degreed engineers understand your parts and the chemicals, temperatures and physical stress the basket will face. We then design a basket that balances form, function, efficiency and longevity, using the appropriate material, wire gauge and finish. Finishes include electropolish, plating and protective coatings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between welded and woven wire mesh baskets?

Welded baskets have wires crossed and welded at each intersection for a rigid structure. Woven baskets interlace the strands and weld only to the frame, which suits finer parts but is usually less rigid.

Should I choose a 304 or 316 stainless steel mesh basket?

304 works for most washing, sterilization and handling. 316 is better for saltwater or high-chloride environments.

Are mesh baskets a good fit for ultrasonic cleaning?

Yes. The open structure lets fluid and cavitation reach parts evenly, and welded construction holds up to the vibration.

Can I get a custom wire mesh basket for my specific parts?

Yes. We design to your part dimensions, process requirements and material preferences, for one-off designs or high-volume recurring orders.

How do I choose the right basket style?

Use our basket selection guide or contact our engineers.
